So tonight there is one league fixture taking place in the Pro League between Waasland-Beveren and Genk at the Freethiel Stadion. Like most Belgian matches, I can’t imagine it being a sellout, especially on a Tuesday night, but despite all that, there’s still a lot at stake for both sides.
We’ll start with the home side. Beveren have probably had a season where they can still improve on last year (finishing twelfth), as last season was their best season for a number of years and after their last result, they certainly have something to build on. A fantastic 2-0 away win at Eupen gave them breathing space ahead of a tough match tonight.
The visitors also have some hope of reaching the championship play off, being only 3 points off Charleroi in 6th. After winning their last fixture 1-0 albeit against fellow strugglers Mouscron, and it was at home, they’ll certainly feel as confident as tonight’s hosts of coming away with something other than a defeat. So far this calender year they have been without topscorer Nikos Karelis starting up top, who unfortunately will be out for the rest of the season, and have relied on second topscorer Mbwana Samata, new signing Naranjo and returning loanee Siebe Scrijvers, who may come back to haunt the side he was on loan at for 6 months this season.
The last time these 2 met they shared 4 goals, and most importantly, Beveren took a 2-0 headstart in a 2-2. I say most importantly because Beveren should hopefully take a lot of heart knowing that if they were defensively switched on, they could be 2 points better off right now. And with the home crowd helping the battlers tonight, they could easily take a victory from tonight’s performance.
Like most matches, some matches look predictable on paper and them can become unpredictable, and I feel the same about tonight. It may not be a goalfest, but the underdog out of these 2 may rise to the occasion!
